Let’s meetup and go for a walk along the Chicago Riverwalk.
We’ll start off at Biggby Coffee (309 West Lakee).
Then we’ll take a casual stroll along the riverwalk to see various noteworthy points, stopping along the way to admire the architecture.
It’s 2.5 miles roundtrip.
Please note that this is an in-person event, not an online/virtual program over Zoom.

The Chicago Riverwalk is a multi-use public open space located on the south bank of the main branch of the Chicago River in Chicago, extending from Lake Michigan and the Outer Drive Bridge westward to the Wolf Point area and Lake Street. The Chicago Riverwalk contains restaurants, bars, cafes, small parks, boat and kayak rentals, a Vietnam War memorial, and other amenities.
The 1.25-mile long path has been constructed in phases over time and includes four distinct districts; The Confluence, The Arcade, The Civic, and the Esplanade. The Chicago River is a treasured natural amenity in the urban canyon of world famous architecture and the Chicago RiverwaIk allows a close proximity to the waterway. The continuous path from Lake Street to the lake front also allows a vertical connection from Upper Wacker Drive down to the waterway.

Cost: FREE for the guided walking tour - optional breakfast afterward (location to-be-determined) at your own expense.
Weather: This event will take place light rain or shine. If it’s on our calendar then we’re proceeding as planned.
Before the Event: Optional breakfast, socializing, and restrooms at the Biggby Coffee 8:15 - 8:45 am.
Meeting Point: 8:30 am at Biggby Coffee - 309 West Lake (off West Wacker Drive) - https://biggby.com/
Please be on-time or early. Look for your hosts Robert (wearing a fedora-style hat) along with a group of friendly people. We’ll depart on our walk at approximately 8:45 am.
Icebreaker Introductions: We should have a good-sized group and so instead of everyone introducing themselves to the group we will get to know each other by distributing blank stickers and colored markers and we’ll ask everyone to write down on their sticker: 1). first name. 2). favorite food. 3). dream vacation. Example: “Michele - Strawberries - Kenya” or “Robert - Chocolate - Tokyo”.
Late Arrivals: Catch-up to the group by going to the Riverwalk and heading east towards Lake Michigan.
Walking Distance: Approximately 2.5 miles roundtrip at a moderate pace with several stops along the way.
Ending Point: Near our Biggby Coffee starting point.
After the Event: Optional group breakfast at a to-be-determined location.

The Art Institute of Chicago, founded in 1879, is one of the oldest and largest art museums in the world. It is based in the Art Institute of Chicago Building in Chicago's Grant Park. Recognized for its curatorial efforts and popularity among visitors, its collection, stewarded by 11 curatorial departments, is encyclopedic, and includes works such as Georges Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, Pablo Picasso's The Old Guitarist, Edward Hopper's Nighthawks, and Grant Wood's American Gothic. Its permanent collection of nearly 300,000 works of art is augmented by more than 30 special exhibitions mounted yearly that illuminate aspects of the collection and present curatorial and scientific research.
As a research institution, the Art Institute also has a conservation and conservation science department, five conservation laboratories, and Ryerson and Burnham Libraries, one of the nation's largest art history and architecture libraries.
The growth of the collection has warranted several additions to the museum's 1893 building, which was constructed for the World's Columbian Exposition. The most recent expansion, the Modern Wing designed by Renzo Piano, opened in 2009 and increased the museum's footprint to nearly one million square feet, making it the second-largest art museum in the United States, after the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Art Institute is associated with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, a leading art school, making it one of the few remaining unified arts institutions in the United States.***

Event Description
Join us on our walk to discuss the history of the Maxwell Street Market, Maxwell Street Polish, and the effects of urban renewal.
Join us for a walk through the Maxwell Street Market and the surrounding area . We will meet at 1 pm at the corner of Roosevelt & Halstead and walk approximately two miles while discussing the history of the area and market, Maxwell Street Polish Sausage, and the effects of urban renewal.
This will be a Maxwell Market Sunday and we will be talking about Maxwell Street Polish and will end at Express Grill. Attendees will be responsible for purchasing their own food if they are interested.
Please look for the person holding the sign that says "GWCN Event Meet Here" and the corner of Roosevelt & Halstead.
This event is free and welcome to all ages and abilities. We will be walking about two miles so please be prepared to wear comfortable shoes and weather appropriate clothing.

Maxwell Street is an east–west street in Chicago, Illinois, that intersects with Halsted Street just south of Roosevelt Road. It runs at 1330 South in the numbering system running from 500 West to 1126 West. The Maxwell Street neighborhood is considered part of the Near West Side and is one of the city's oldest residential districts. It is the location of the celebrated Maxwell Street Market (sometimes known as "Jew Town" and the birthplace of Chicago blues and the "Maxwell Street Polish", a sausage sandwich. A large portion of the area is part of the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago and a private housing development sponsored by the university.

Let's honor and remember one of America's greatest modern artists, Jackson Pollock, on the 70th anniversary of his death (August 11, 1956).
We'll be screening the 2000 film "Pollock", which features an all-star cast including Ed Harris in the title role.The first portion of our program, approximately 15-20 minutes, will be a brief overview of the film, including its historical context, plot summary, things to look for, accuracy, etc.
The second portion of our program will be a full screening of the film.During and after the screening we invite you to participate in a discussion of the film with your fellow art lovers via Zoom.
Paul Jackson Pollock (January 28, 1912 – August 11, 1956) was an American painter. A major figure in the abstract expressionist movement, he was widely noticed for his "drip technique" of pouring or splashing liquid household paint onto a horizontal surface, enabling him to view and paint his canvases from all angles. It was called all-over painting and action painting, because Pollock covered the entire canvas and used the force of his whole body to paint, often in a frenetic dancing style. This extreme form of abstraction divided critics: some praised the immediacy of the creation, while others derided the random effects.
A reclusive and volatile personality, Pollock struggled with alcoholism for most of his life. In 1945, he married artist Lee Krasner, who became an important influence on his career and on his legacy. Pollock died in August 1956 at age 44 in an alcohol-related single-car collision when he was driving. Four months after his death, Pollock was given a memorial retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. A larger, more comprehensive exhibition of his work was held there in 1967. In 1998 and 1999, Pollock's work was honored with large-scale retrospective exhibitions at MoMA and the Tate Gallery in London.Pollock is a 2000 American independent biographical drama film centered on the life of American painter Jackson Pollock, his struggles with alcoholism, as well as his troubled marriage to his wife Lee Krasner. The film stars Ed Harris, Marcia Gay Harden, Jennifer Connelly, Val Kilmer, Robert Knott, Bud Cort, Molly Regan, and Sada Thompson, and was directed by Harris.
Marcia Gay Harden won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for portraying Lee Krasner. Ed Harris received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his portrayal of Pollock. The film was a long-term personal project for Harris based on his reading of the 1989 biography Jackson Pollock: An American Saga, written by Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith.Film Trailer
