Recap of Part 8 Act 3,
After the party wakes up in the morning at the centaur camp, Korak greets them and introduces them to their centaur guide Erdija , he also tells them the temp has dropped, and the ground is icy. Erdija has decided to cross the river at the bridge at the town of Vurnirn . The party decides to do some shopping there, and they all pick up some boot cleats for the ice. After leaving town, and crossing the river, they make their way through the forest and into the dry and icy riverbed between the cliffs. Late in the afternoon they run into a dark rider on a large elk, after a round of discussion on what to do the party attacks. Anakis starts with casting shield, and a move to the rider, Zuar recognizes it, a Cold Rider , and transforms into a dinosaur, Gutrender moves in to attack riding his wolf. The cold rider hits the party with an ice storm, and then they all end up in melee. The party surrounds the rider gaining flanking, Gutrenders wolf is able to trip the Elk, separating it from the rider. After killing the elk, they concentrate on the rider, Zaur is able to grapple the rider in his mouth, and Gutrender finishes him off. After healing they set up camp to rest for the night.
Zaur gets the first watch but does not detect the Andrazku Demons that would attack at night. Two of the demons picked the wrong tent to teleport into, as it was Zaur’s empty tent and he was on watch, and one of them would teleport in Gutrenders tent with his wolf. The two in Zaur’s tent move out to attack, and go large with righteous might. Zaur would shift into a huge cat, as Anakis came out to attack, Zaur and Anakis would face the two demons, while Gutrender and his wolf took on the one in their tent. Zaur did more claw, claw bite, and a grapple, Anakis was doing some tripping, and minor damage as he could not get in sneak attack. Gutrender had their demon flanked, and between trips bits, and sword attacks they dropped their enemy. Zuar and Anakis, with some help from Gutrender and Wolf finished off the demons. They would collect treasure and finish their rest for the night.
In the morning they eat, pack up and then return to their trek to Artrosa , they would get there by evening and start to plan their climb to the top of the mesa, about a half mile up. Zaur shifted into a flying dinosaur creature, and they cast spider climb on the wolf, and Anakis. With the knowledge of the door being visible at the waxing of the moon , they would have to climb the mesa of the Maiden to get in. Their guide Erdija would not be going up with the party. On the ascent the party would run into some Will-O-Wisps . The Whisps in their invisible form got off a round of electric shocks, not to damaging, but then Zaur cast protection from electricity, and then had to bluff on taking damage to keep the Whisps interested long enough to kill them. After the short battle they would get the rest of the way up with ease.
At the top there was a grove of dead looking trees, one has the corpse of a centaur in its limbs. There is a huge tree in the middle of the grove in front of the entrance, this one was livelier and had tentacles. There are bones as well as items laying all around the huge tree. The party approached, and the tree spoke, “All who seek to enter Artrosa must first present me with a sacrifice.” The tree then points to the centaur corps in the tree by him. The party recognizes this tree as a witch tree, Zaur tries some diplomacy to find out if there is something else it will except like gold, it then replies “You must prove your worth to pass inside. Offer me something warm, living, and bloody, or I will take a sacrifice myself—one of my choosing. I have stood here for centuries and claimed many sacrifices. Their bones are a testament to their foolishness in thinking they could win their way past me.” Zaur tries more diplomacy for another solution, and the tree gives them a riddle to answer to get in.
Midnight, Morning, Bright Sun—
Spoke thee with but one.
Accursed now you be,
For he befell the wrath
Of two times seven.
Oh tell me, who is he?
It would take a while and a few clues, but the answer is one of Baya Yaga’s riders, “Illarion Matveius,” The Black rider of Baba Yaga. With the correct answer the Witch Tree guardian lets them in. The party curious about some of the items laying amongst the bones, ask the tree if they can have them, the tree tells them no, “it’s mine do not touch”, they do a detect magic and pick up some magic on items on the ground. They decide to go in now, and plan to return later to kill the tree and take the items.
Once inside there was a 10’ wide staircase cut from the stone leading down the 15’ high hall, the walls had scenes with a lovely maiden. The part heard two women arguing as they descended the stairs, they paused to listen in, one is questioning whether they should have let Caigreal the hag and a fierce-looking centaur with his mob of frost giants inside. The other voice is saying it was fine, they did get past the witch tree, they must be allowed. but there is also no need to tell Jadrenka about the new guests. Getting some names but little context, may want to question her. Anakis tried to stealth down the stairs into the room, but was heard. Gutrender on his wolf made it in to attack on a double move by the wolf, and Zaur still in huge allosaurus form came down to attack. The creature turned out to be a female Ettin , she got a few attacks in, but the battle did not last long, Anakis was able to trip the large creature, and Zaur and Gutrender could not miss. After they killed her, Anakis suggested they heal her enough to question later after they rest for info on the dungeon, they tied and gagged her before moving on.
The party went down the descending hallway, it was only ten foot wide, so Zaur had to squeeze after a bit they ran into a frost giant. The battle would take place in the hall, between the giant and Zaur, the rest of the party was blocked from moving past the huge allosaurus. Zaur would win the battle easily by constantly grabbing the giant in its maw.
