What we’re about
Hey there, fellow book enthusiast! Are you searching for a warm, inviting space to connect with fellow women and nonbinary readers who share your passion for books? Join us for an engaging monthly meetup where we dive into compelling fiction (with exciting surprises from time to time!), savor delightful rosé (or your favorite drink), and unwind in fantastic company.
Whether you're a lifelong bibliophile or just rediscovering your love for reading, this group thrives on fun, camaraderie, and community spirit. You'll have a say in what we read next, as we'll vote on each month's selection together, ensuring that every voice is heard.
Here's some basic meetup rules so that everyone can have an enjoyable experience:
1. If you RSVP Yes to an event, please make every effort to go to the event.
2. If you find that you are not able to go to the event, go back onto the website and change your RSVP to No, as soon as you know you can't go. However, be aware of the new 24 hour cancellation rule.
3. If you RSVP for an event and the event is full, you will be placed on a wait list. If you really want to go to an event, keep your schedule flexible and be available to go, even up until the last minute.
4. If you are on the waitlist and do end up making other plans, go onto the site and change your RSVP to No and let the next person that is willing to wait move up instead.
5. Please reserve your RSVP by venmo. RSVPs without payment will be removed to make space for paid attendees.
### Book Babes No-Show Policy
We value everyone’s time and commitment, so in order to ensure that our events run smoothly and that members have the best experience possible, we’ve implemented a no-show policy. Please read the following guidelines:
### What Is Considered a No-Show?
A No-Show is defined as a member who RSVPs for an event but does not attend without prior notice or a valid reason. This can include:
- Not showing up for a scheduled event.
- Not canceling your RSVP in advance if you’re unable to attend.
### How We Handle No-Shows
- First No-Show: We understand that life happens! A single no-show is typically forgiven without issue. However, we encourage members to update their RSVP within 24hrs of event if they can’t make it.
- Second No-Show: After two no-shows without notification, you may be temporarily restricted from RSVPing to future events. We'll reach out to let you know.
- Frequent No-Shows: If you have multiple no-shows in a short period, we may contact you to discuss your attendance. Depending on the situation, we may ask you to step back from attending events for a period of time to ensure the group remains fair and enjoyable for everyone.
✨ Come for the captivating stories, stay for the lasting friendships.
We can't wait to welcome you to our next gathering!

The hardest thing in the world is to live only once…
One late summer evening in the post-industrial town of East Gladness, Connecticut, nineteen-year-old Hai stands on the edge of a bridge in pelting rain, ready to jump, when he hears someone shout across the river. The voice belongs to Grazina, an elderly widow succumbing to dementia, who convinces him to take another path. Bereft and out of options, he quickly becomes her caretaker. Over the course of the year, the unlikely pair develops a life-altering bond, one built on empathy, spiritual reckoning, and heartbreak, with the power to alter Hai’s relationship to himself, his family, and a community at the brink.
Following the cycles of history, memory, and time, The Emperor of Gladness shows the profound ways in which love, labor, and loneliness form the bedrock of American life. At its heart is a brave epic about what it means to exist on the fringes of society and to reckon with the wounds that haunt our collective soul. Hallmarks of Vuong’s writing – formal innovation, syntactic dexterity, and the ability to twin grit with grace through tenderness – are on full display in this story of loss, hope, and how far we would go to possess one of life’s most fleeting mercies: a second chance.
