What we’re about
This group is operated by Appalachian Mountain Club New York-North Jersey Chapter (7/1/22)
The New York-North Jersey Chapter of AMC was the first chapter formed by the club back in 1912. For over 100 years the NYNJ chapter has been protecting the precious natural resources of our region, providing skills and leadership training, and hosting 100's of outdoor activities every year for the public through our professional and dedicated volunteer trip leaders.
Beginner or expert the AMC NYNJ chapter has something for everyone. With activities that include hiking, biking, paddling, backpacking, skiing, climbing, and more we're sure you will find something you love. And since we know living in and around the NYC area can be difficult without a car, many of our activities are accessible through public transportation.
Beyond just the trips, training, and conservation advocacy we are a group that encourages community and camaraderie among it's members. Open and welcoming to anyone with an interest in the outdoors we hope that the shared knowledge and experiences between all of us will help you to grow within the outdoor community and create connections and friendships for a lifetime.
What sets us apart the other Meetup groups?
• Professionally trained volunteer leaders means our trips are well organized, safe AND fun!
• Easy access on public transportation to many of our activities.
• Activities are open to anyone, no membership dues are required, but your support helps.
• Your support helps us continue to protect more than 100,000 acres of land and 2,000 miles of trails under the care of the Appalachian Mountain Club.
• Beyond our volunteer led activities AMC provides opportunities for tens of thousands of youth to experience the outdoors each year through our Youth Opportunities Program.
While this Meetup Group showcases some of our best activities they don't all make it to this page and often you will only see a small fraction of what is available! If you would like to see the full assortment of upcoming activities offered by the NYNJ chapter please click here.

Timothy Watters - Westmoreland Sanctuary, Monday Morning (5.5 to 8.5 Miles)Westmoreland Sanctuary, Mount Kisco, NY
Overview:
- 9:30 am, Monday, June 2
- Westmoreland Sanctuary, Mt Kisco, NY
- Terrain: 5.5 miles (low-moderate for Westmoreland only) to 8.5 miles (moderate with Butler included)
- Pace: moderate
- No bushwacks or rock scrambles; the optional second part of the hike (Butler) may include some minor stream crossings
Details:
Start the week on a high note with the low-moderate terrain of the Westmoreland Sanctuary's full outer loop, plus the option of up to 2.9 miles on the Red and Orange trails at the adjoining Arthur Butler Nature Conservancy. The Westmoreland trails are mostly flat to gently inclined; hiking counter-clockwise, the first hour is easy (Spruce Hill, Hemlock, Cole Kettle), followed by a few low-moderate and moderate climbs at Fox Run, Wood Thrush and the two-year old Raptor Ridge trail later on.
We'll stop for short breaks but with an estimated return to the starting point around 12 o'clock, no lunch stop is planned en route. There are picnic tables next to the park office where those of us continuing on to Butler can eat lunch; everyone else is welcome to bring food and enjoy a bite with us as well. There is also an indoor bathroom at the Westmoreland office available for public use.
We'll then cross Chestnut Ridge Road for a seven minute walk on a paved access road to the Butler trailhead. At Butler, we'll take the Red and Orange trails counter-clockwise, between 2.4 and 2.9 miles and featuring some moderate climbs in the optional last mile.
Dogs are not permitted at Westmoreland.
RSVP only for "Yes," by Sunday 6 pm please; you can pre-register online (the new AMC process) so you don't have to do the paperwork on Monday morning. This is the link:

- Muscoot Farm Moderate HikeMuscoot Farm, Katonah, NY
Expect a very scenic hike at a "very" moderate pace and view live, exotic, and local animals in a farm environment. Muscoot Farm is an early 20th-century interpretative farm museum in Katonah. The farm is owned and operated by the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation.
Today’s moderately paced 3.5 mile hike will be mainly on the yellow and other nearby trails. A few hills, no rock scrambling. No pets allowed. View the animals at your own pace after the hike is completed. Joint with the Westchester Hiking Meetup Group. Guests are invited if they can keep up.
Certainly, bring lunch or a snack. Plenty of picnic tables and restrooms available. This location will be a unique experience and for a few hours. Inclement weather postpones hike.
Drivers: Meet 10 AM in the farm parking lot. The farm opens at 10 AM.
Address: Muscoot Farm, 51 Route 100, Katonah, NY 10536If interested in public transportation take the 8:18 train from GCT arriving at Katonah, NY at 9:29 AM.
