About us
Independent theatre a/perture cinema brings the most wonderful (and whimsical/weird/wild) films to downtown Winston-Salem, including lots of gems that you might otherwise never see. Let this club give you an excuse to come out once a month and explore what the silver screen has to offer.
We'll see one of the movies that's playing on the second Thursday of every month and—if you have the time and interest!—head to the coffee shop next door to discuss (to be honest, this part is the most fun!). To allow everyone to attend (and responsibly go to work on Friday) we'll always pick something that screens around 6pm.
Event dates will be shared well in advance,* while final film selection and showtimes will be posted about one week prior to the event—we can't choose a film until after a/perture posts what's screening, after all!
*Dates are sometimes shifted in the summer when travel and vacation is more common.

March Movie Meetup (3/12) - Sirāt @ 5:45pm
a/perture cinema, 311 west fourth st., Winston-Salem, NC, USBilled as a "father-seeks-daughter-in-unfamiliar-and-dangerous(?)-places" film, Sirat is a film with some tricks up its sleeve—it plays with traditional cinematic structure to the extent that multiple different critics have come to different interpretations, and yet it was a darling at Cannes. Despite its multiple scenes of desert raves, it brings the heavy—and potentially existential—questions for its characters to consider... and, hopefully, us!
- Meeting Up & Talking After: Once you have your ticket, take the hallway to the right off the main entrance (past the men's restrooms/on the way to the lower-level theaters) to the members "ta/ke out" section—there are some chairs and a small area where we usually say hello to one another before heading into the movie (especially if it's your first time!). Someone will be there from ~15 minutes before the film until just before showtime. If you arrive late, just head into the film and you can join us after—we go next door to the Washington Perk coffee shop to discuss.
- Please update your RSVP if you can't make it—this helps with a few things, including how many people we're keeping an eye out for—and sometimes lets people use your ticket if you can't!
- Recommended: purchasing your ticket online ahead of time; this lets a/perture know if more people than expected are coming, AND keeps you from waiting in line if you don't want concessions.
- And remember: You do NOT need to be a serious cinephile to join our group—but we hope you're open to talking about your ideas anyway, and learning from the insights of others!
- Parking Info from a/perture (there's a parking garage right behind the theatre—and a/perture provides a $4 coupon for your stay!).
Details from a/perture:
Director: Oliver Laxe Run Time: 115 min. Release Year: 2025 Language: Spanish
Starring: Bruno Núñez, Joshua Liam Henderson, Richard Bellamy, Sergi López, Stefania Gadda
A man and his son arrive at a rave lost in the mountains of Morocco. They are looking for Marina, their daughter and sister, who disappeared months ago at another rave. Driven by fate, they decide to follow a group of ravers in search of one last party, in hopes Marina will be there. Winner of the Jury Prize at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, nominated for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Score at the Golden Globes, and Spain’s submission for Best International Feature at the 98th Academy Awards.
“Its visual and sonic magnitude notwithstanding, “Sirāt” is a drama of intimate exchanges and transactions, of improbable bonds forged under adversity and small blessings freely and unexpectedly given. Here, in these uninhabitable surroundings, Laxe taps into an oasis of communal feeling that transcends barriers of background and language.” ~ Justin Chang, The New Yorker17 attendees
