Ohio Kayak Adventures (OKA)

Join us for a long and uniquely Cleveland paddle from Cuyahoga Valley National Park to Lake Erie!

We’ll launch at Lock 39 and follow the Cuyahoga River downstream through wooded sections of the lower river valley, Cleveland’s industrial corridor, the Flats, and the federal shipping channel. After reaching the river mouth, we’ll continue through the harbor to the Wendy Park paddling access.

The official route information lists Lock 39 to Rivergate Park/Merwin’s Wharf as 11.9 miles, followed by approximately 1.3–1.5 miles to Wendy Park, making the complete trip about 14 miles.

This route is mostly Class I current and flatwater, but the distance, active shipping channel, commercial vessels, motorboat wakes, and final harbor section make it appropriate for experienced paddlers only.

We will meet at Wendy Park first, unload boats, and organize a vehicle shuttle to the launch location.

For this trip, we are not meeting at the launch location first. Please keep this in mind before RSVP’ing. Everyone should be prepared to help transport paddlers and boats as part of the shuttle.

The river access is approximately 100 feet from the drop-off area. Restrooms and drinking water are available nearby at Rockside Station.

• The mouth of the Cuyahoga River and Cleveland harbor
• A waterfront finish at Wendy Park

## ⚠️ Experience Required

This is not a beginner paddle. Participants should be comfortable with:

• Paddling approximately 14 miles
• Maintaining a steady pace for several hours
• Performing a deep-water self-rescue
• Handling wind, waves, powerboat wakes, and confused water
• Paddling near walls, docks, bridges, and commercial traffic
• Following group instructions and shipping-channel safety procedures

The final four miles before Merwin’s Wharf enter the federal shipping channel, which is shared with large freighters and motorized recreational boats. Wendy Park can also have concentrated motorboat traffic, along with wind and waves from Lake Erie.

A properly equipped kayak with secure flotation is required. A touring or recreational kayak 12 feet or longer with good tracking and stability is strongly recommended. Short recreational kayaks and lightweight recreational inflatables are not recommended for this trip.

## 🛟 Required and Recommended Equipment

• Properly fitted PFD, worn at all times
• Whistle or another sound-signaling device
• Valid Ohio boat registration
• Charged phone secured in a waterproof case or dry bag
• Bilge pump or another means of removing water
• Bright or highly visible clothing
• Plenty of water, food, sun protection, and personal medication
• Change of clothing secured in a dry bag
• Marine VHF radio strongly recommended

Large commercial vessels cannot maneuver quickly and may not be able to see individual paddlers. Stay close to shore unless crossing, never cross directly in front of a freighter, and point your boat into approaching wakes. Paddlers should review the Cuyahoga River Ship Channel map and understand the designated passing and danger zones before the trip.

## 🌭 Post-Paddle Cookout

After the paddle, Haigang will bring a grill and bratwursts for the group.
Feel free to bring a side dish, snack, dessert, drink, or anything else you would like to share. Please keep any food that needs refrigeration properly chilled during the trip.

This event is dependent on:

• River level and flow
• Recent rainfall and water quality
• Weather and air temperature
• Wind and Lake Erie conditions
• Commercial vessel traffic

The trip may be delayed, shortened, relocated, or canceled if conditions are unsuitable. Please check the Meetup page before leaving home for any last-minute updates.

The Allegheny River is a federally designated National Wild & Scenic River, known for its abundant wildlife, quiet backwaters, and forested, uninhabited islands that are ideal for primitive camping. This section flows through the Allegheny National Forest and offers some of the most scenic multi-day paddling in the Northeast.

## Itinerary

Tuesday, 8/18 — Optional
Arrive early and camp at Cornplanter State Forest, close to the river, for those who would like a more relaxed start.

Wednesday, 8/19
We will first meet at the takeout location and then shuttle cars in the morning. We will paddle about 17 miles downstream from Kinzua Dam to a secluded, undeveloped island for primitive camping. Along the way, we may see bald eagles, great blue herons, and possibly river otters.
Evening: campfire on the island under the stars.

Thursday, 8/20
Paddle about 20 miles to another secluded, undeveloped island for primitive camping.

Friday, 8/21
Paddle about 15 miles to the take-out location at President Village. After take-out, join us for a hamburger cookout lunch before heading home.

## Requirements

• Solid kayaking skills: able to paddle 3+ mph on flat water
• Kayak with valid OH or PA registration
• Kayak should be at least 12 feet long for efficiency and stability
• Primitive camping experience required; there are no facilities on the islands
• Prepared for overnight temperatures possibly in the low 40s
• Bring all camping gear, water, and meals
• Pack light, waterproof, and self-sufficient

• Shuttle coordination will be required, so please be ready to help with vehicles.
• This trip is weather- and river-level-dependent. It may be postponed if river levels are too high or conditions are unsafe.
• Because this is a multi-day primitive camping trip, preference may be given to paddlers whose kayaking and camping skills I am already familiar with.
